Maternal Health Program
In the Central Plateau of Haiti there is a high rate of maternal mortality. In fact, Haiti’s statistics regarding maternal mortality are among the highest in the Caribbean. An estimated 1 in 44 women die in pregnancy or childbirth. Even before the catastrophic earthquake, pregnancy in Haiti was perilous making Haiti one of the most dangerous places to give birth in the Western Hemisphere.
In Zimbabwe, the statistics are similar with the home birth rate being very high due to extreme poverty. United Nations and UNICEF reports indicate that the child mortality rates have increased at a rate between 20-50% estimating 1 in every 8-10 children dying before their 5th birthday due to HIV/AIDS, "Major causes of death of children under five are HIV/AIDS, newborn disorders, pneumonia and diarrhea," they said.
To Love a Child (TLC) is taking measures to help with this situation. Working with registered nurses, mid-wives and health care workers, TLC is now providing prenatal vitamins to pregnant women. Since the rate of home births is substantially high we are providing “Bundles of Love” Birthing Kits. These kits contain simple supplies and materials that are highly effective in keeping the birth environment clean and lowering the chances of infection. We are also providing “Bundles of Joy” Newborn Baby Kits which contain items needed for the baby during the first months of life.
TLC is also in the process of organizing a mobile health program to travel to our sites to provide vaccinations and immunizations.
