Build An Orphanage
History
Long before our involvement with the Orphanage of Good Will a women’s business group in Port au Prince looked after the needs of the 26 orphans in this home. In 2009 they requested our assistance to provide food, supplies and other services to this group of beautiful children ranging from 2 to 14 years of age. We immediately lost our hearts to these children as well as the 11 members of the women’s group so deeply rooted in the future of these orphans. They gave generously and tirelessly in time, talent and resources to ensure the children were well taken care of. We were thrilled to become involved and planned to create a roof top garden as an additional food source as well as provide school supplies, personal hygiene supplies, toys, and financial assistance for nutrition, tuition and physical improvements within the home. The children who called the Orphanage of Good Will “home” all have family stories of great sadness and poverty. Each one was welcomed into the home and into the loving arms of its caretaker, Luzianne. Under her day to day guidance each child was cared for as if they were her very own. On our first visit to the orphanage we were introduced to a special new addition–the 27th orphan–a small, frail young boy who Luzianne found abandoned in a trash heap on the streets of Port au Prince. Luzianne brought the 1 1/2 yr. old child to the orphanage, bathed him, fed him and clothed him. She named him Moise and he now flourishes under her care.
On January 12, 2010 our plans changed drastically when a powerful earthquake of 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti. The home many of these children knew for nearly a lifetime was no longer safe. Luzianne and all the children were first forced into the street and then into a open field with 20,000 other people who were also scrambling for safety, clean water and food. They lived in a make-shift 10′ x 12′ tent made out of 4 wooden poles, a tarp for a roof and sheets for walls. The few belongings they managed to get out of the orphanage were kept inside the vehicle parked near their tent.
11 days after the quake To Love a Child sent a team of 3 people to Haiti. Their goal was specific–to locate the children and move them to an area that could provide safety, shelter, food and water. Within 24 hours of their arrival the team had loaded up the children along with their belongings and moved them to a beautiful rural location in Croix des Bouquet. The children live in a tent and over the months small improvements have been made to make the children comfortable. The goal is to purchase property and build a structure that will comfortably house the children.
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of three of the members of the women’s business group due to the earthquake. They are and will continue to be missed but the memory of their friendship and dedication to the children will remain forever.
Further, the remaining members of the group suffered the enormous loss of their homes and their businesses. To Love a Child is now the major supporter of the 30 children; food, education, transportation to school, and medical care. Additionally, Luzianne, the caretaker, has had many medical issues unfortunately leading to the amputation of her foot.
Critical Needs
1. Build an Orphanage: Funds are needed to purchase property and build a structure approprtiate for growing boys and girls to include a kitchen, bedrooms, common area, dining room, bathrooms and storage room. The building will need to be handicapp accessible. A drilled well is needed to provide clean water as well as solar power to provide light. Tables, chairs, beds, and kitchen equipment
must also be added to the list. Total Cost: $60,000
2. Orphan Care: It is important to see that the 27 children in this orphanage are well cared for. They need proper nutrition, medical assistance and the care of loving individuals who are dedicated. They deserve the best education we can give them. Help us support their needs. Total Cost Per Month: $3,250
