Kimberly's Journey with To Love a Child, Inc.

I first met Cindy and To Love a Child in 2007 when I was in high school. I worked in the parish house kitchen for our pastor when visitors came to Laschahobas, Haiti. To Love a Child and their volunteers were frequent visitors.
I was a hard worker in school and spent a lot of time to master the English language. It wasn’t long before I became a translator for To Love a Child and traveled with them to Rantlamouaie where their projects were.
To Love a Child brought many good things to Haiti. They provided a lot of help to the children at the orphanage in Carrefour and their work in Rantlamouaie was even more substantial, i.e., classrooms, a medical clinic, and a kitchen classroom. They provided solar electricity, a water purification system, a latrine, and hand wash stations. They even planted gardens and fed the students as often as they had the possibility to do so.
To Love a Child always provided a lot of supplies for the clinic, school, pregnant woman, kids, and adults. They also paid for surgery and advanced medical care for a lot of people who could not afford care in Haiti. They sent them to the hospital to save their lives. Personally, I can certify how many lives they have saved.
To Love a Child has helped all kinds of people in Haiti; the young and the old. They believe in education. They have helped pay school tuition for my younger sister, Dielene, since she was in preschool and now, she is in her last year of high school. They have helped my brother and they have help me too. I graduated from high school and went on to college to become a RN. It is very difficult finding a job as a nurse in Haiti, so I moved to Boston in October of 2019 in search of better opportunities. I am proud to say I just completed my nurse’s assistant training and look forward to additional classes to continue my nursing career here in the states.
I am so lucky to have met the nice people involved with To Love a Child and believe they have made me a better person.

Meet Marie Maude Gustamar and Read Her Story

I used to live at the Orphanage (AEIH) Aides Aux Enfants Infortunies in Carrefour,Haiti with my sister, Cleavland, and her husband, Domond, who are the caretakers. In 2016 I reunited with a boy from my childhood, we fell in love, and we married in 2019. My husband moved to America twenty-three years ago and he brought me here when we married. I am going to school and am taking classes to become a Certified Nurse’s Assistant.
I have traveled with Mrs. Cindy to Rantlamouaie, in the central plateau. The plateau is in the San Juan Valley and occupies about 150 square miles (390 square km) in the center of the country. The plateau has an average elevation of about 1,000 feet (300 meters). Access is difficult through winding roads that often wash out during rainstorms. For decades people there have not had access to clean water and sanitation. They have had to drank dirty water that made them sick. By God’s grace, they found Mrs. Cindy and To Love a Child who were able to install a system for clean water and so much more.
I worked with To Love a Child at the orphanage many times. Even though it is managed by responsible, loving, and caring people it still needed a lot of help. The experiences we had with To Love a Child were amazing. The organization provided food, books, school supplies, clothing, educational programs, helped with maintenance projects and even had a party for children every time they visited. The kids were very excited to get all these things. They helped the children a lot and made them make feel like they had a real home.
Days before coming to this year's annual dinner in November, I spoke to my sister, Cleavland, to let her know that I would be there. She asked me to greet all of you and especially Mrs. Cindy and Mr. Tim. Thank you all for what you have done for the children. We will never forget you.
